TOWER teaser

Coming fall 2009, Tower marks the first collaboration between crime writers Ken Bruen (The Guards, Once Were Cops) and Reed Farrel Coleman (The James Deans, The Fourth Victim), and the first original novel published by Busted Flush Press. With four Shamus Awards and four Edgar Award nominations (and plenty of other trophies!) between them, Bruen and Coleman combine forces with a novel that is steeped in metaphysics, baseball, and brutality... Over the next few months leading up to publication, we'll reveal here bits and pieces about the book, with interviews, excerpts, contests and more. Today, we have a sampling of the cover copy. Enjoy, and please spread the word! [If you need any Ken Bruen or Reed Farrel Coleman bibliography checklist bookmarks, just shoot us an e-mail.]

"Born into a rough Brooklyn neighborhood, outsiders in their own families, Nick and Todd forge a lifelong bond that persists in the face of crushing loss, blood, and betrayal. Low-level wiseguys with little ambition and even less of a future, the friends become major players in the potential destruction of an international crime syndicate that stretches from the cargo area at Kennedy Airport to the streets of New York, Belfast, and Boston to the alleyways of Mexican border towns. Their paths are littered with the bodies of undercover cops, snitches, lovers, and stone-cold killers.

"In the tradition of The Long Goodbye, Mystic River, and The Departed, Tower is a powerful meditation on friendship, fate, and fatality. A twice-told tale done in the unique format of parallel narratives that intersect at deadly crossroads, Tower is like a beautifully crafted knife to the heart.

"Imagine a Brooklyn rabbi/poet—Reed Farrel Coleman—collaborating with a mad Celt from the West of Ireland—Ken Bruen—to produce a novel unlike anything you’ve ever encountered. A ferocious blast of gut-wrenching passion that blends the fierce granite of Galway and the streetwise rap of Brooklyn. Fasten your seat belts, this is an experience that is as incendiary as it is heart shriven."

RANDOM PRAISE

A. E. Maxwell's The Frog and the Scorpion: "Excellent characterization and dialogue... action-packed and thrilling.... The book has aged remarkably well, with issues such as illegal immigration and terrorism that could have been ripped from today's headlines. Busted Flush has done the crime fiction world a real favor by finding forgotten gems such as this and reprinting them."—Maddy Van Hertbruggen, Reviewing the Evidence

Ken Bruen & Reed Farrel Coleman's Tower is "One of my favorite books this year!"—Scott Montgomery, BookPeople (Austin, TX)

“Imagine a character with the panache of James Bond, the business purpose and personal code of Travis McGee, and the physical prowess (and appetites?) of Mike Hammer. Then put them into the female form of Emma Rhodes.”—Drood Review of Mystery on Cynthia Smith's Emma Rhodes mysteries

“From first word to last, Miami Purity is noir without mercy. [Vicki] Hendricks captures the throbbing emotions of her characters: angry, desperate, depraved, sleazy, passionate, and uncontrolled, they are like blood vessels ready to burst. Their vigor for life threatens their very existence, and like two drunken, sweaty dancers in a darkened bar, they rub right up against the edge of destruction, at once afraid of pushing through to the other side and unable to think of anything else.”—Cullen Gallagher, “Pulp Serenade” (02/27/09)

Ace Atkins writes with authority and power about a land as complicated and mysterious as his plot. Rich, evocative, a treat, Crossroad Blues is a page turner with a compelling protagonist and a style all its own.”—Carolyn Haines

"Need some good news? David Thompson, publisher of Busted Flush Press... is putting one of his (and my) favorite series ever back into print... When the Fiddler books [by A. E. Maxwell] first came out, their lean prose and evocative looks at California life won comparisons to Spenser and McGee. Now, thanks to Thompson, we can all relive the pleasures of our youth."—Dick Adler, former crime fiction reviewer for the Chicago Tribune, "The Knowledgeable Blogger" (02/21/09)

THE JAMES DEANS
"Some writers can make you feel that they have inhabited their characters to a degree associated with demonic possession, but Reed Farrel Coleman's gift is to graft that sensation onto the reader, so that he or she feels they're wearing the character like skin...[A] terrific writer, one of the finest of his generation. JUST ANOTHER DAY IN PARADISE

JUST ANOTHER DAY IN PARADISE
"The writing is lean and restrained, and Fiddler, growing from book to book, gives Travis McGee a real run for his money." -- Los Angeles Times

THE FROG AND THE SCORPION

THE FROG AND THE SCORPION
“A. E. Maxwell wrote one of the smartest, most consistent PI series in recent memory. Big plots, great villains, and a kickass private eye with plenty of humanity. The toughness of Robert B. Parker’s early Spenser novels blended with the wry humor and scope of Ross Thomas. Wholly original, endlessly entertaining. The books of A. E. Maxwell are a forgotten treasure.” -- Tim Maleeny

GATSBY'S VINEYARD

GATSBY\
"Unlike too many other fictional p.i.'s, Fiddler has aged well. So has his ex-wife and occasional bedmate, Fiora, one of the smartest, toughest, sexiest broads in crime fiction. The plots are well-hewn, the dialogue crackling, the bad guys among the very baddest. But the real payoff is A.E. Maxwell's gimlet-eyed take on California circa 1980s. From the yachty Newport crowd and the oenophiles of Napa to the dream-seeking denizens of L.A., Maxwell's books provide a sort of literary amber, capturing the scene and saving it for posterity." -- Bob Morris
